Ash Wednesday

The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Jewish and Christian worship, and the Imposition of Ashes can be a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation. This practice is the historic focus of Ash Wednesday observance and gave the day its name. It is traditional to save the palm branches from the previous Passion/Palm Sunday service and burn them ahead of time to produce the ashes for this service.

Change for Children

Each year, UM churches give loose change to benefit children's ministries in Holston Conference and other United Methodist related ministries around the world.

Donating our loose pocket change will enable Change for Children grants to be awarded to support new and existing ministries with economically disadvantaged children (birth to age 12) and their families across our UM connection.

A message from the Administrative Board of Grove United Methodist Church:

It has been very distributing and shocking to see in Ukraine the destruction of cities, the slaughter of innocent men, women, and children, the inhumane treatment of fellow human beings due to the invasion by the Russian army.  We, as a Christian community, ask ‘What can we do?’ to help.  The most common answer is ‘Pray for Peace.’  While that is a standard and meaningful response, it alone does little to relieve the suffering of the people of Ukraine.  UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, is currently providing tangible relief in terms of food, water, medical supplies, etc. as well as people on the ground to help both those who have fled Ukraine and become refugees and those who have remained in their homeland.  The Administrative Board of Grove United Methodist Church (GUMC) believes it is important to support in a tangible manner the relief efforts in Ukraine through UMCOR.  Our members individually have already contributed to UMCOR but we believe we need to do more.  We will pray for the people of Ukraine but the Administrative Board of Grove UMC as a community of Christ set a goal of $5,000 to donate to UMCOR for Ukraine relief.  We, the members of that Board, request that all who believe in this relief effort consider joining with us.  Grove UMC will collect donations through the Lenten season and will dedicate our entire Easter offering to UMCOR for Ukraine relief.  Should we not receive the entire goal from individuals, groups, organizations, etc., Grove UMC will provide the remainder of the $5,000.  Our hope, of course, is that we will receive more than the goal of $5,000 and the entire amount will be provided to UMCOR to aid in a small manner toward the massive amounts required for relief efforts that must continue for many years.

Pray for peace and contribute to relief.

Lenten offering to benefit the people of Ukraine

Grove UMC is committed to giving $5000.00

November Food Drive

Every November, Grove conducts a food drive for the Radford Food Bank. This year our food drive will be in memory of Grove member, Katherine Martin. Our Grove family has been giving generously to the food bank throughout the entire year, and we have received word that we are the only church that has been donating. We thank you for remaining faithful.

Please contribute one or more of these items:

FOOD ITEMS • SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

TOOTHBRUSHES & PASTE • PAPER TOWELS/NAPKINS • FACIAL & TOILET PAPER

Community Thanksgiving is an annual tradition at Grove. This will be our 17th year offering our community a Thanksgiving meal. We will plan to serve 300 meals as we did last year. We plan to follow the same COVID protocols that we used last year.
Our meal will be drive-thru pickup. We will deliver meals to our First Responders and the Women's Resource Center. We will also deliver to any church member who is unable to come pick up a meal. Please call the church office and let Dana know that you need a meal delivered. We need your help with making desserts, and we will need volunteers to help prepare and serve the meal. Also, the cost of the meal will be more this year. Due to COVID and supply chain issues, the cost of food has increased. As in previous years, I challenge you to sponsor a meal. We estimate the price will be $6.

A $20 donation will help us feed three people on Thanksgiving Day. Make your contributions payable to Grove UMC and write Community Thanksgiving on the memo line. We appreciate your support. There will be sign-up sheets in the Narthex in the coming weeks to volunteer and to sign up to bring a homemade dessert. Your generosity never fails.

April 2021

Let me extend a personal invitation to join me in a brief 5-week study of the book of James.  James is one of those little books (5 short chapters) in the New Testament, that can have a major impact on our life.

Our study together is very informal.  Each week we will read a chapter and come together to discuss.  Frankly, it is just plain fun to get together, read scripture, and share our thoughts and questions.

Here's the scoop:

- Meeting is hybrid (in person Fellowship Hall and zoom)

- Wednesdays beginning April 28 - that's this week :)

- 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

- Materials needed:  A Bible, pen, and journal (need a Bible? we can make that happen!)

- Please read Chapter 1 for this week....no time?....come anyway as we will be reading passages together

- Let me know you are going to join us by emailing me at groveumcpastor@gmail.com OR by calling the church office 540-639-2807.  If you are planning on joining via zoom it will be important for you to let me know ahead of time so I can send you a link.

Focus for Each Week:
Chapter 1: Portrait of a Christian Life
Chapter 2: Honest Relationships and Practices of Faith
Chapter 3: The Language We Use
Chapter 4: Cravings
Chapter 5: Real Security
Have a great day and hope to hear from you soon.

Blessings

Jan
